Substance Addiction Treatment
Promises provides a range of clinical services for the treatment of addiction to various substances such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco and others. Our treatment approach draws on current evidence-based interventions to manage the condition. It utilizes a variety of therapeutic interventions to help address the mental health issues that span the different stages of recovery.
Biological, psychological, social, cultural, spiritual and other factors relating to addictions are addressed by our clinicians in treating each client’s mental and physical health and their addiction problems.
Where medically supervised detoxification is required for individuals with substance abuse addictions, our current treatment approach is based on a model that emphasizes these key elements:
- Medical Detoxification
- Relapse Prevention
- Continuing Care

What can I expect?
Screening and Assessment
The first step consists of screening and assessment. It is intended to assess the severity of substance use and co-morbid conditions, in order to identify the appropriate level of treatment and detox.
A detailed assessment is vital to pick up the key issues and start treatment for any other co-occurring issues like depression, anxiety and psychoses. Our certified addiction therapists will carry out comprehensive assessments including laboratory and psychological tests.
Medical Detoxification is the next phase of substance addiction treatment aimed at abstinence and recovery. The main goal of detoxification is to provide safe withdrawal from the substance dependence in a way that is humane and protects the patient’s dignity.
These patients proceed with detoxification under the direction of a psychiatrist, in a controlled and medically supervised environment. At Promises, we directly liaise with private hospitals to maintain patient confidentiality. This step may not be required if a client is not severely physically dependent on the substance.
Once detoxification is complete (or not required), the next step is relapse prevention.
There are several components:
- Where a stay in rehab is required, we work with multiple partners in the region to smooth admissions with continuity of care.
- With psychiatrists on our team, we are able to treat both medical and mental health issues which can co-occur with drug addiction in an outpatient setting e.g. prescription of required medication.
- Our therapists are trained in CBT, 12 step facilitation and other treatment pathways for recovery. Individual one-to-one sessions can be used to learn the techniques for relapse prevention. Couple or family sessions are also recommended at this stage, as support is crucial
- Our therapists will also assist with co-occuring addictions, compulsions, mental disorders, anxiety, depression and trauma
Continuing Care represents the maintenance of wellness, which is key to achieving one’s recovery goals. This may take the form of 12 step recovery group meetings or other group therapies, individual one-on-one counselling, couples and family therapy, and mindfulness techniques.
